Parte I: a história de quatro anos

2019-2022

-

Part II: The history of four years

2019-2022

It was in 2019, in the seventh month of my first pregnancy, that this series began to take shape. After a few years disconnected from painting, pregnancy called me back to watercolours. I began to document the process of pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding through watercolour paintings in small formats.

This body of work emerged from the conditions of my environment. I needed a practice that could fit within the more restrained moment I was living through. The only option was to work at the living room table, using small sized paper and non-toxic paint. Motherhood itself revealed such a powerful force that, at first, I withdrew, overwhelmed. Painting small fragments of the reality of being a mother brought me the rhythm, care, and space I needed.

I painted the changes in the size, shape, colour, and texture of my body. I painted my daughter and our moments of connection through breastfeeding.

In 2023, I went through several personal changes: my children and I left an abusive relationship and moved into our current home. There, a cycle of pain came to an end, and I was finally able to breathe under my own roof. This reclaiming of identity, belonging, and autonomy marked the beginning of a new body of work.

One night, in our new home, after putting the children to bed and settling them into their beds, I sat observing the dark, quiet room, watching my children sleep. I cried with relief and emotion, recognizing everything I had overcome. It had been four years of becoming a mother of two and fighting to guide our lives on my own terms.
